How Do Rising Interest Rates Hurt Small Business, and What Can Owners Do About It?

On 29 September 2026 the RBA lifted the cash rate 25 basis points to 4.60%. It is the fourth hike this year and the highest rate since 2011. For small business, that means dearer debt, tighter cash flow and softer customer spending. The owners who come through fix their structure early.
The Fourth Hike, And More May Follow
The RBA says it will keep going if needed to bring inflation back to target. HSBC's chief economist for Australia expects another lift in Q4, most likely in November, after the Q3 CPI print. Inflation was 3.5% at last count.
I have my views on how Canberra got us here. But blame does not pay a loan instalment. You cannot control the cash rate. You can control your structure.
What It Does To A Small Business
Debt costs more. Variable business loans, equipment finance and commercial property loans all reprice upward.
Cash flow tightens at the same time. NAB's latest survey shows business conditions negative for the first time since September 2020, with profitability and trading conditions weakening. Fuel, energy and wage costs keep climbing while customers pay slower.
The failures are already showing. Construction had 3,359 insolvencies over the past financial year, and transport insolvencies rose 13.9%.
What Toyota Taught Me In 1990
I joined Toyota Japan in 1990. Iraq had invaded Kuwait and the Gulf War followed. The cash rate in Australia had hit 17.5% that January. Australia fell into recession, and unemployment rose to 10.8%.
As a globally franchised business at the time, we got through it. Not through luck, but through three Japanese words that I still use with clients today.
Muda is waste. Any activity that costs you time or money and adds no value for the customer.
Mura is unevenness. Lumpy demand, erratic cash flow, a business that runs feast or famine.
Muri is overburden. Pushing people, machines or balance sheets beyond what they can sustain.
Here is the part most owners miss. Mura and Muri are the root causes. Muda is the visible symptom. Fix the first two and much of the waste disappears on its own.
In a small business, Muri is you working 70 hours while carrying debt your cash flow cannot support. Mura is revenue that arrives in bursts while costs arrive every week. Muda is the unused subscriptions, the rework, the dead stock and the discounts that bought nothing.
Six Ways To Relieve The Pressure
Call your lender before you miss a payment. Review fixed versus variable and test the market. Lenders deal far better with early conversations than late ones.
Fix Mura first. Take deposits upfront, shorten payment terms, chase debtors weekly and build a rolling 13 week cash forecast.
Cut Muda. Audit every recurring cost, every source of rework and every slow-moving stock line this month.
Use the tax settings. The $20,000 instant asset write-off is now permanent from 1 July 2026 for businesses under $10 million turnover. From 2026-27, companies can also claim a refund of tax paid in the previous two years using current losses. Confirm eligibility with your accountant.
Get help early. The Small Business Debt Helpline and NewAccess for Small Business Owners received an additional $8 million from 1 July 2026. Speak to the ATO before a tax debt falls due, not after.
Reduce Muri by systemising. If the business stops when you stop, you are the bottleneck. Document how it runs and build the roles around the process, not around you.
None of this is financial advice. Talk to your accountant and lender about your own numbers.
Where Franchising Fits
Franchising is not a rescue plan. It is a financial model that only works when the business underneath is sound.
A business that is ready to franchise has documented systems, proven unit economics and an owner who is no longer the bottleneck. That is the same discipline that survives a rate cycle. At Franchising Made Easy we build that commercial and operational structure first, before a single legal document is drafted.
FAQs
Will the RBA raise rates again?
The RBA has said it will if needed. The next decision is due on 3 November 2026, with the 28 October CPI a key input. Economists are divided on timing, so plan for higher, not lower.
What is the fastest way to ease cash flow pressure?
Collect faster and spend smarter. Upfront deposits, shorter terms and a weekly debtor review move cash within weeks. Then speak to your lender.
Can a small business get help with debt?
Yes. The Small Business Debt Helpline is free and funded through 2026-27. Your accountant can also advise on tax relief options.
